'Earthquake Campaign: "One day for them" Ecuador needs your help
On Saturday evening, April 16, Ecuador’s coastline suffered a massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale; the strongest seismic event in our modern history. You have read or seen on the news the devastation that was caused. Our countrymen are truly suffering. Homes were lost, family members died, and the infrastructure and communications system collapsed.
The cut flower sector, mostly located 150 miles away in the Andean highlands, suffered little direct damage. Our farms continue to work and export daily to our clients. We have received a profusion of e-mails, phone calls, and messages expressing your concern and support. We are deeply appreciative.
All members of Expoflores and many non-member growers are collaborating. We have already collected food, clothing, bottled water, and other basic needs. Every night we send truckloads to the affected areas. Currently Ecuador receives significant help and donations in this disaster, especially from The United States, Canada, Spain, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico. Aid includes rescue personnel and their rescue dogs, medicine, food, and basic supplies.
Often in these disaster cases, there is a surge of help that tapers off as the months go by. We at EXPOFLORES feel we have to aim towards the second phase; to rebuild after this terrible disaster. We have to help doing what we know best. Many of you have visited our self-sufficient farms. We are best at small infrastructure projects.
Our goal is to build special UV filtering greenhouses. These temporary structures help communities operate medical centers, schools, dining rooms, or even sleeping areas. They will provide reasonably comfortable shelters protected from rain, extreme sunlight, and bugs. We will focus on small towns of 3,000 to 5,000 inhabitants. If our budget is sufficient, we will add water purification reservoirs and systems to be used for cooking, washing, and other non-potable necessities.
We hope, with your help, that all these towns will be able to recover from this disaster in no less than three years.
EXPOFLORES and all its members deeply appreciate your support of this program.
Donations can be made to the following PAYPAL account:
All funds will be used for this project and will be audited by AUDITRICON. EXPOFLORES will issue monthly reports on the progress of this project and the situation in the areas where we will be working.
Once again, we appreciate your concern and support. With your permission we will publish the names of the donors so we as exporters know of your kind help.
